Chapter Seventeen
DYLAN
"Dylan!" Neil barked. "Office. Now."
I nearly dropped the tray I was carrying at the shrill command. Neil was in rare form that night, and another dancer had just quit. If he was a waiter, I would almost have been tempted to call it job security, but while going off suppressants and following the doctor's diet had helped with my energy levels, I was sicker than ever and all I wanted to do was crawl into bed. I had already called in late once that week, and I knew there was a good chance that was what Neil was calling me into his office to scold me for.
At least I knew he didn't have time to train a new waiter. I figured it was still a couple of months before I'd be showing too much to keep working. Male omegas usually showed signs of pregnancy sooner than females, and we tended to deliver a month earlier on average, but I'd been applying to every job I could find since finals were over. Somehow, I'd made it through the semester with my GPA mostly intact, but I was pretty sure morning sickness had blown my last interview. I needed to keep from getting fired for a few more weeks, at least.
"Sit down," Neil ordered, leaning on the edge of his desk. I would have vastly preferred to have the cheap fake wood slab between us, but I sat in the chair across from him and shifted to get comfortable. My feet were even more swollen than usual after pulling a double, but I only had a couple of hours left in my shift. If I could survive Neil.
The alpha looked me over in obvious disapproval, his arms folded as he scanned me. There was the usual lust in his gaze, which he never seemed the least bit inclined to mask, but something else, too. Something new. "You've put on weight."
I blinked. "Excuse me?"
He was right, technically. After following the doctor's orders, I would have put on a good ten pounds even if I hadn't been pregnant. I still wasn't showing much baby weight, and I was thinner than most of the other omegas. Shanna had ordered a new uniform for me, and I knew she wouldn't rat me out to Neil, but the fact that he'd noticed wasn't doing anything to help my latent self-esteem issues. All it took was one comment from an alpha and I felt like the teenager who'd starved himself in a desperate if failed attempt to fit in with the cool kids.
"Don't give me that look. At this rate, you're gonna need a tablecloth, not a uniform," he scoffed, clearly finding far more humor in his comment than I did. "Oh, come on, Dylan. Lighten up."
"Did you really call me in here just to make fun of me?"
He rolled his eyes. "Don't be so dramatic. I know you've been grabbing up extra shifts, so I was going to offer you the chance to make a little extra cash, but if you're gonna be like that.
